Science has now proven that by the time we’re 35 years old, we have formed fixed patterns in our brain, that have created fixed habits which make up our personal reality (aka. personality).

Have you ever heard the sayings,

“You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” or

“They’re set in their ways” or

“Stubborn as a mule.”

Well there’s a reason why we have these sayings. They all speak to the notion of a person being fixed, static and unchangeable.

As we age and experience situations in life, we form neuropathways in our brain that fire when we’re presented with particular thoughts or situations. These pathways become engrained in the brain the more they are travelled. When triggered, an electric response in the brain sends messages throughout the body. These messages affect how we think, feel and act.

That being said…Dr. Dispenza shares how the brain is not as static as we once thought, and so we CAN CHANGE the neuropathways in our brain. This scientific revelation brings hope that it’s never too late to change. There’s no more excuses. You can become a better person. You just need to learn how to get over yourself. Stop getting in your own way.

“Neurons that fire together, wire together” – Donald Hebb

The more we respond in the same manner, to the same stimuli, the more automatic and unconscious our behaviour becomes – whether that behaviour is positive or negative. Our subconscious accepts whatever we focus on the most, so if you want to change your thoughts, your habits or behaviour, you need to consistently repeat the new thought or habit or behaviour you want to create until it becomes automatic. No wonder they say it’s harder for adults to change!

Now what does all this mean for you? Well firstly, take a deep breath and release all guilt. It’s ok if you’re struggling with change. That’s normal. Stop beating yourself up about it! When you fail and fall back into old habits or thought patterns, the most important thing is to get back up and keep trying. It’s only through consistent effort will change eventually come. Keep in mind, it’s taken you a while to become the person you are right now and if you want to change, you need to become that newer person (aka. someone else). You have to become conscious of your thought patterns, change the ones that’s not helping you, monitor your feelings and change how you CHOOSE to feel and behave. For lasting change, you must be willing to put in time daily to re-wire your brain.

In Dr. Dispenza’s perfectly titled book, “Breaking The Habit Of Being Yourself” he goes into more detail on how to do this and teaches meditation techniques to help you on your journey. Whether you’re trying to reinvent yourself, trying to release yourself from past hurts, trying to heal your body or trying to fix those bad habits that just keep getting in your way, Dr. Dispenza shares how healing your mind first, can heal everything else.

If you’ve tried and failed fighting those unhealthy inner thoughts, then listen to Dr. Joe Dispenza explain the science behind why you struggle to get over yourself and how you can finally overcome. The thing I love most is that, Dr. Dispenza articulates things in such a way that you don’t feel guilty, but instead you feel empowered, encouraged and comforted that you’re not the only one going through this struggle. You don’t have to feel like shit, to be told how to become a better person. He even shares testimonials of others who have been cured of cancer and other ailments following his techniques. It’s amazing the power the mind holds!
